Feeling anxious or nervous about dental treatment is very common.

For some patients, this anxiety can make it difficult to proceed with care. Sedation may be an option to help make treatment more comfortable and manageable.

What is dental sedation?

Sedation involves the use of medication to help you feel calm and relaxed during your dental appointment. With intravenous (IV) sedation, patients typically remain conscious and able to respond, but feel deeply relaxed and less aware of the treatment being carried out. Many patients report that the experience feels dream-like and that time appears to pass more quickly.

Sedation does not put you to sleep in the same way as a general anaesthetic, and its suitability varies from person to person.

Sedation for treatment with Dr Kit Spears

Where appropriate, IV sedation may be available to patients undergoing treatment with Dr Kit Spears. Sedation is provided by an independent, suitably qualified sedation provider, such as a specialist dental sedation service, who is responsible for administering and monitoring the sedation throughout your appointment.

A full assessment will be carried out beforehand to ensure sedation is suitable for you. This will include a review of your medical history and an opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns.

• Sedation is not suitable for everyone.
• A separate consultation and consent process is required.
• You will need an escort to accompany you home after sedation.
• You will be given clear pre- and post-treatment instructions.
