Logbook Guidance for Mentees

Maintaining a clear and accurate logbook is an important part of safe clinical development in implant dentistry.

A logbook helps demonstrate how experience has been gained, how cases were selected appropriately, and how learning has been supported through reflection and mentoring.

This guidance is intended to help mentees understand what a logbook is, how to use it appropriately, and how it relates to mentoring.

What a logbook is

A logbook is a structured record of clinical cases and reflective learning. It provides evidence of:

• Progressive experience over time.
• Appropriate case selection.
• Considered treatment planning.
• Reflection on outcomes and complications.
• Learning supported by mentoring where applicable.

A logbook supports professional development and accountability, but it is not a qualification, licence, or proof of competence in itself.

What a logbook is not

It is important to be clear that a logbook:

• Does not grant permission to place implants.
• Does not imply certification or “sign-off”.
• Is not approved or endorsed by the GDC.
• Does not transfer responsibility to a mentor.

The treating clinician always remains fully responsible for patient care.

What should be recorded

Each logbook entry should be clear, honest, and anonymised, and typically includes:

• Date of treatment.
• Case type (e.g. single implant, grafting, extraction and implant).
• Brief anonymised patient context.
• Pre-operative assessment and rationale for treatment choice.
• Imaging used (PA / CBCT where appropriate).
• Treatment carried out.
• Outcome and any complications.
• Reflection: what went well, what could be improved, and learning points.
• Whether the case was mentored, and in what format (in-person or remote).

The emphasis should be on learning and judgement, not simply recording case numbers.

Mentored Cases

A mentored case is one where an experienced clinician has:

• Discussed treatment planning prior to treatment.
• Provided guidance or support.
• Reviewed the outcome with reflective feedback.

Mentoring supports learning but does not replace clinical responsibility. Mentored cases may be suitable for inclusion in a professional logbook where appropriate.

Informal advice vs formal mentoring

• Informal case advice (e.g. brief guidance on straightforward queries) should not be recorded as a mentored case.
• Formal mentoring (structured planning, review, and reflection) may be suitable for logbook inclusion.
• Clear distinction between the two supports transparency and professional integrity.

Professional responsibilities

As a mentee, you are expected to:

• Practice within your scope of competence.
• Hold appropriate professional indemnity insurance.
• Ensure valid consent and record keeping.
• Follow GDC Standards for the Dental Team.
• Use mentoring as support, not substitution for training or judgement.

A logbook should accurately reflect your own decision-making and learning.

Reflective practice

Reflection is a key component of a meaningful logbook. This may include:

• What influenced your case selection
• Challenges encountered
• How mentoring influenced your thinking
• What you would do differently in future cases
• Honest reflection, including complications, strengthens your professional development and credibility.

Use of logbooks

Logbooks may be used to support:

• Personal development and appraisal.
• Discussions with indemnity providers.
• Entry to postgraduate education or structured training.
• Demonstration of safe, progressive experience.

Acceptance of logbooks for any formal purpose remains at the discretion of the relevant organisation.

A logbook documents how competence is being developed; it does not prove competence on its own. Used properly, it supports safe progression, reflective learning, and professional accountability.
